Updated School Mask Policy

Boston Catholic Schools Office - September 29, 2021

Dear School Leaders, Teachers, and Staff,

After consultation with Cardinal O’Malley, the Archdiocese of Boston will extend the universal mask requirement through November 1st, tracking the requirement recently announced by Governor Baker for public schools. At that time, the requirement will be revisited. This mask requirement applies to children age 5 and above.

Consistent with the Governor’s approach, any school that has at least 80 percent of its combined faculty, staff, and students vaccinated may suspend the requirement for masking of vaccinated individuals – at the discretion of the local Catholic school. Any school suspending the requirement needs to notify the Catholic Schools Office before implementing this change. Unvaccinated individuals would be required to continue to wear masks.

This decision applies to Archdiocese of Boston Catholic schools and RCAB-related Catholic schools. At their discretion, independent Catholic schools and Catholic schools governed by religious orders may consider following similar guidance.

The Cardinal and I continue to urge vaccination as the most effective way to stem the pandemic.

In Christ,

Thomas W. Carroll

Superintendent of Catholic Schools

Archdiocese of Boston
